Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule popularly known as Jyotiba Phule convened a meeting of his followers and admirers on 24th September, 1873, and it was decided to form the 'Satya Shodhak Samaj' (Society of Seekers of Truth) with Jotirao as its first president and treasurer. Every member had to take a pledge of loyalty to the British Empire.
